The term kill refers to causing death of a creature.

When kills are made by summoned minions, totems, traps or mines, player characters are credited for kills for the purposes of increased item quantity and rarity, flasks, and achievement-related stats, but generally not combat-related stats, where the non-player entity would get the credit for the kill instead. This can be demonstrated with enemies cursed with Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.. granting endurance charges to those non-player entities making the kills.

However, there is currently a bug [citation needed] that causes any damage over time kills to always grant credit to the player character even if they aren't caused by the character directly. For example, monsters cursed with Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.. will grant the player frenzy charges if they are killed by poison caused by minions or killed by Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.. linked Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes... This may or may not be an intended effect.

Totems and minions that have despawned, either through their duration expiring, being killed, or spawning more than the maximum amount, all count as having died. For instance, players wearing a Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.. will be cursed when their totems despawn.

Corpses[]

Most creatures leave corpses on death. Totems and non-unique monsters killed when frozen or under certain effects (e.g. Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Kitava's Feast) don't leave corpses.

Corpses can be utilized in several ways, for example:

  • raised (e.g. Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Necromancer monsters)
  • created (e.g. Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes..)
  • exploded (e.g. Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., strongboxes with the Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "mods.name"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.. prefix)
  • consumed (e.g. Offering, Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.., Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "skill._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes.. (from Lua error: Error: invalid field alias "items._pageName"; aliases cannot contain dots or quotes..), monsters with the "Mark of Cannibalism" bloodline, etc.)

Corpses can be targeted by holding the A key by default, but only if the player has a skill that can target corpses.

On/when kill effects[]

Similarly to on-hit effects, there are effects that trigger when creature has been killed:
