There are several methods of obtaining skills gems:
- As a reward for completing a quest (see Quest Reward Gems).
- Purchased from town vendors once a certain quest is complete.
- As the result of a vendor recipe (see Vendor recipe system#Skill Gems).
- Random drop from monster, chest or strongbox.
Since the latter two options are random, some gems are more difficult to obtain and potentially more valuable.

All Vaal Gems cannot be purchased. There are several ways to obtain them:
