Molten Shell

Molten Shell is a spell that temporarily grants the player extra armour and casts an explosion of fire damage to surrounding enemies when a certain amount of physical damage has been prevented.

Skill functions and interactions

• Absorbed Damage: once cast, any physical damage that is negated by armour (including armour gained via Granite Flask and Molten Shell itself), blocking, by the skill Immortal Call, or by the skill Arctic Armour will count towards triggering explosions. The only damage mitigation provided by the skill is the bonus to armour while the buff is active. The Detonation Threshold stat only indicates the threshold at which the buff will end and an explosion will take place.

• Buff Effect: Modifiers to Molten Shell's buff effect will only affect the armour granted by the skill, not the damage, duration, or absorbed damage required.

• Duration: skill and buff/debuff duration will both increase the duration of Molten Shell. When the duration of Molten Shell expires, the buff and any accumulated damage toward an explosion is lost. An explosion will not occur if Molten Shell's buff timer times out.

• Spell Totem: a linked with Molten Shell can and will cast Molten Shell but is highly unlikely to ever detonate because of its lack of defense.

• Spell Block: Molten Shell keeps track only of physical damage blocked so it will never detonate if the player blocks elemental spells. Physical spells do contribute to the threshold.

• Vaal Molten Shell: casting Molten Shell while Vaal Molten Shell is active will terminate the Vaal Molten Shell buff and replace it for the casted Molten Shell. This will happen both ways (when Vaal Molten Shell is casted while Molten Shell is active). This makes it unfavorable to use both skills in conjunction with one another.
