Separate page for socket / page cleanup
Currently "Socket" and "Link" redirect to this skill page. I think Socket really should have it's own page - there is a lot more that could be said about the socket system but even the brief mention here is cluttering up this page as a side topic. --Qetuth-(talk) 06:53, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
  +
: I agree. This page should receive a clean up in general. Active skills are not exclusive to gems (like how corrupted items give you skills or items like whispering ice) and support gems shouldn't probably be on this page. Skills don't necessarily cost mana either (like vaal skills which don't) and how auras rather reserve mana then cost it. Perhaps some of the info here should go into pages like active skill gem and support skill gem which is the fully qualified name the game uses for those types of items.

: I went ahead and moved some info to a Item socket page though. --OmegaK2 (t|c) 09:48, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

It seems something has gone wrong with all the skill gem pages, http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Active_skill_gem , http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Skill_gem , http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Support_skill_gem , all the level reqs, attribute reqs, and even some of the gems have gone missing, i looked at the history and it doesnt seem to have been changed and I look at these pages daily so I'm 90% sure they were correct yesterday. I have no idea how to fix it.<small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by ‎Sogybritches (talk • contribs) 00:10, 10 June 2016 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:Unsigned -->

Support Gem Pages[]

Support Gems should have individual pages for discussion of their varied uses I think. Especially the really interesting ones like Trap and Totem. Ionface 06:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Agreed, each support gem will need to have it's own page, which details how the gem levels alongside possible best uses. Skill pages should also have a section about possible good support gems for that skill. Iamacyborg 17:44, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Sounds fine, as long as the list of gem uses does not become too subjective or too specific (e.g. "Chain is awesome with Ethereal Knives"). Better to stay as general as possible. Adalace (talk) 01:14, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Skill Navbox[]

Just thinking whether or not it'd be worth creating a navbox for skills to insert in all the relevant pages, anyone have an opinion on it? My only misgivings are that it might end up being pretty huge and slightly complicated as a result. Iamacyborg 15:21, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

I think it just needs a link back to this page, and this page needs more categories and information. Ionface 11:24, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
I'll have a think about the best way to set something like that up, and possibly play around with a navbox as well just to see what it might look like, they're pretty easy to set up. Iamacyborg 14:15, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Skill Videos[]

Instead of an image thumbnail, it might be worth having a short 10 or so second video demonstrating the skill on relevant pages. Similar to what the Sacred Wiki does http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php5/Sacred_2:Clustering_Maelstrom Anyone have any opinions on the matter? Iamacyborg (talk) 18:13, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

I am a fan of video on wiki, and there could also be animated gifs in the place of the static images we have now. Ionface (talk) 15:52, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Compatibility Matrix ?[]

I think we should have a compatibility matrix between Support Gems and Skill Gems. This way it's easy for people to know what they can link up. Is this already on the wiki somewhere? Should it have it's own page or be part of this page? --AnnanFay (talk) 05:24, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

I just uploaded a spreadsheet of all the skills relative to what attributes they need(red gems needing agi or int etc). I will start working on something like this tomorrow. --Battlemaster (talk) 20:46, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
I incorporated your spreadsheet data into some new sortable tables for the active skills. I left the type out because I think these qualifiers can be included as part of a compatibility matrix like AnnanFay was talking about. --Angelflonne (talk) 23:48, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
The Iron Grip (and Point Blank) support gem links to the passive skill and not to the actual support gem site, but that's a fault of the template --Goliath (talk) 08:06, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Gem values[]

Current gem values are way off. I'm in process of fixing the ones I've personally leveled (18 total, currently). I suspect the values won't be very accurate for some time. --Xhopesfal24 (talk) 20:35, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

History[]

I'd not expect that the information about changes from (older) patches are really that useful/neccessary to put them explicit on each itemized aspect of the game, especially since these informations are already (browsable + seekable) available in the specific patch notes pages. --Mr.Cee (talk) 12:16, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

I've already added the version history to every skill and i'm not going to remove them again (if everyone thinks like that feel free to remove it). I know that these informations are not that important that's why i'm going to collapse the table if they are getting too long. --Goliath (talk) 12:20, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
I actually really like having that information available on those pages. They definitely belong there. Iamacyborg (talk) 12:25, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
It's much better to have all pertinent information readily available on each respective page rather than having to go look for it. The version history for skills is extremely useful and should definitely stay. I've seen the same thing on other Wikis and I've always found it quite helpful especially when I've been away from the game for a time.--FaceLicker (talk) 13:13, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
I completely agree. I like how Goliath did the version history on each skill page. —Vinifera7 (talk) 14:47, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Gem quest rewards[]

I'll admit I don't want to be the one to wrestle a table this large, but wouldn't it be nice to have a table displaying the gem quest rewards per class? Here's an example of the sort of thing I'm talking about: http://blackrabbit2999.blogspot.com/2012/07/path-of-exile-quest-gem-reward-list.html Adalace (talk) 01:10, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

You mean something like Quest Rewards ?--Goliath (talk) 01:19, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Keywords / Classifications[]

I'm thinking about changing the keywords so that they will link to a category with skills of the same keyword / classification rather than to the explanation. The explanation could still be linked from within the category "Lightning skills are influenced by Lightning" etc. I think user should be able to find skills of the same type, which is currently not that easy. For example, Tempest Shield would be in Lightning and Spell--Goliath (talk) 18:35, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

I completely agree!!! -AnnanFay (talk) 22:04, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

So i had this in my mind: Fire for both active skills and support gems, for active skills and for support gems. I placed Fire in the skill template and another one () at the bottom of the page. Now the problem is that i somehow thought that Fire would create a category and place the skill inside, but it isn't of course... I don't want Category:Fire and Category:Fire skills at the bottom of the page because that's too much and might be confusing. One solution for this problem is to place Category:Fire skills and Category:Fire support gems into Category:Fire but then there's no complete gem list... --Goliath (talk) 18:36, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Ignoring the functionality, I think it would make the most sense to categorise them under Category:Skill, Category:Fire, Category:Spell, etc. (or plural equivalents). Something being a skill gem is independent from it being a fire gem or strength/red gem so making combined categories (Fire strength support gems) or sub categories is confusing.
Functionally I'd like to be able to list pages which lie in the cross section of two categories. Fire+Skill, Fire+Cold (for looking up gems to go in Heatshiver), Skill+Dexterity, etc.
We can do the first easily. Maybe there is an extension which provides the functional part? -AnnanFay (talk) 20:53, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
By cross section I really meant intersection! There's a category of extensions which seem related. -AnnanFay (talk) 20:57, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Anyone have thoughts on this? -AnnanFay (talk) 16:45, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
The category tree extension would allow us to create lists of all pages in a category, so we could add a list of Category:Spell support gems, Category:Area of effect support gems, Category:Projectile support gems on the Fireball page without relying on templates (it would help the navbox too). No intersection, but we mostly need a list of support gem working with Projectile or Spell or Fire attribute, not Spell and Fire. Kalos (talk) 17:12, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Unique "Skills gems in this item are support by ____" affects manacost[]

Source: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/313431#p2723268

Should this info be added here, on the unique items page, or both? --Lazyfulness (talk) 02:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Both. Iamacyborg (talk) 07:46, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Version History[]

This popped up in my Google Alerts, would it be worth adding a Version History to this page? Just to show when new skills and support gems are added and/or removed? Iamacyborg (talk) 13:57, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

I'll start working on assembling the chronological list from the patch notes, if I can't find them online. I can also make the page, and then you guys can decide whether or not you want/need to keep it later. FootHands (talk) 05:45, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
I like this idea - searching through release notes or wiki version pages for something each time is hard, so summaries of changes in specific areas like this could help there. The info for previous versions is not going to change. --Qetuth-(talk) 07:45, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
The page is more or less done. Skills by Release Date; I plan to add dates to the patches (only patches where skill gems were introduced have been added) and I'll roll through the skill discussion forums both to confirm current data and to see if I can reach further back in time. If you want to add... words (gross) to describe the table, I'm fine with that. I mostly just aggregated the data just in case someone actually wanted to use it :D FootHands (talk) 10:03, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

All Skill Gems[]

Is there really a need for this section? It's literally just the two tables above it without a header between them. I can't see what purpose it serves, other than to make it a real long scroll to the bottom. FootHands (talk) 06:20, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

It is basically duplicate information for the sake of being able to alphabetise. I think we should move it onto its own page. --Qetuth-(talk) 07:46, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
No argument, so I will move this section to its own page, List of skills. --Qetuth-(talk) 00:54, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Sockets[]

I think sockets should have its own page or at the very least expanded. There's a lot of info missing especially regarding white sockets. We could do with a few explanatory images as well. Thoughts? -FaceLicker (talk) 11:31, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

I think it definitely deserves its own page.. found this information in the metadata of the gamefiles though I don't know what exactly it is talking about.
Information
Is easily seen that the first number in the three number ratio is the number of sockets.

For the second and third number. It either means its a graphical location for where the socket appears on that item type or They could mean the chances for them to happen. It wouldn't surprise me if it was jsut the graphical location. When 9999 shows up it clearly means that its impossible for it to happen / appear.

Pure conjecture/guessing if it was the Chance for them to appear :

1. This is only for the sockets an item has upon drop or when it is spawned of sorts.

2. That it works by having the third number divided by the second? 100/1 for instance of the chance for an item to spawn with 1 socket.

3. Assuming so then the following values are the chances for each socket in order 1-6: 100, 90, 5.33~, 1.07143~, .14286~, .02. For when an item can't get that socket (the 9999) these are the supposed chances 4-6: .003, .002, .0005.

I find this sort of hard to believe would be values of getting a 6 socket item when using jewelers as .02% chance for a 6 socket seems kinda high but that may just be me. Imo, the Chance for a 6 socket happening could be that it only occurs if the previous 5 socket chance also checked out and so forth down the line.

I'd like to see what others think about it as I have no idea. Just note this was found in the metadata section and that section usually has to do with base/default values or art/rendering details.

Level Requirement for Sockets[]

This section is out-of-date. Does anyone know the real levels for these currently? Realmain (talk) 05:27, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

As far as I know these level reqs are still true, but you can completely circumvent them with a +1-2 sockets strongbox or with Vorici.

--Braunjulian (talk) 21:21, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Order of Vaal gems on this page[]

Should Vaal gems be moved down below Active and Support? It seems odd to have the weirdest skills first. --Qetuth-(talk) 04:07, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

I've been waiting this for years. Can I finilly do it? -TheFrz (talk) 12:23, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, go ahead! Iamacyborg (talk) 14:02, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't even remember suggesting this. But it sounds like a good idea, oddly enough. --Qetuth-(talk) 14:14, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Added a proposed alteration to the Skill Gem Progression Table Format[]

Tables which have columns for damage ranges should have two columns for the minimum and maximum damages. The current format is not portable to Excel or other spreadsheet programs. The new format would allow for easy portability and immediate use in spreadsheets for the purpose of build planning. This would be a format overhaul which would take quite a long time. There are currently 140 Active Skills (including Portal, excluding Detonate Mines and Vaal Skills), 83 Support Gems, and 28 Vaal Skill Gems. That means there are up to 251 pages that potentially need to be modified. However, incremental editing of these tables will not interrupt business as usual; the information will still be human legible even if the initiative hasn't been completed even if it has begun.

Old Format, Copy-Pasted into Libre Office[]

New Proposed Format, Copy-Pasted into Libre Office[]

You should immediately see that this is much more workable in the spreadsheet application.

Below, I have a template based on the Arc Progression table.

I would prefer the ranges split personally, but that could get very messy with complicated skills like Elemental Hit. In any case, those tables are updated by a bot which takes the info from the game files so I'm guessing changing the output format there wouldn't be a very big job. --Qetuth-(talk) 01:59, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
I honestly think the split format is much less readable. I don't see a point of formatting data to be 'exportable' it's counter-productive to what the wiki is for - human readability, not machine readability. For the latter purpose it isn't very complicated to write a script or even just find/replace the dashes with something else before pasting into whatever application one uses. --OmegaK2 (t|c) 03:12, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
I have to agree with OmegaK2 on this one. —Vini (t|c) 13:02, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
Agreed. Also worth remembering that adding extra columns makes it harder to read on mobile, which isn't good. Iamacyborg (talk) 13:33, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Threshold Jewels[]

I have added a threshold jewel section to Fireball. Before I add a bunch others any comments on location on page, format, etc? --Qetuth-(talk) 01:59, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

I like where it's located. I'd like a short introductory text before the table though. Like "The following threshold jewels augment the skill gem./The table below displays threshold jewels that augment the skill." or something similar. --Illviljan (talk) 02:27, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
I like it, although it might make sense to add it to the Skill Functions and Interactions section too, like on Animate Weapon inventory iconAnimate WeaponAnimate WeaponDuration, Minion, Spell, Physical

Separate page for socket / page cleanup[]

Currently "Socket" and "Link" redirect to this skill page. I think Socket really should have it's own page - there is a lot more that could be said about the socket system but even the brief mention here is cluttering up this page as a side topic. --Qetuth-(talk) 06:53, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

I agree.
I went ahead and moved some info to a Item socket page though.

I have no idea how to fix it.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by ‎Sogybritches (talkcontribs) 00:10, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Vaal Immortal Call missing[]

Vaal Immortal Call is missing in the listing of Vaal skills SoilnRock (talk)

Correctly so. See the version history, it can longer be acquired besides trading legacy gems. --Illviljan (talk) 20:39, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
