The Elder is a boss that is invading the Atlas of Worlds. He is the main antagonist of the War for the Atlas expansion. The Elder randomly spawns and fights the Shaper via influencing. The Elder will spawn on the player's Atlas once at least 20 maps are influenced.

Note: Completing 20 maps while the Elder and its guardians are on the player's Atlas without actually defeating any of them gives them a chance to disappear and remove the Elder-influence from the maps they were on.

Arena

The arena is called Absence of Value and Meaning.

Strategy

Normal Phase

The Elder uses the following moves from the start:

  • Default attack
  • Ice Spears: Launches ice spears in various ways, dealing cold damage. He can fire multiple icicles in a large arc or several in a smaller arc.
  • Ring of Death: Casts a ring around him, creating a field that gradually grows larger over time. After several seconds, it explodes for massive physical damage, enough to kill most builds. You must stay inside the ring to avoid taking damage.
  • Siphon - Dives into the ground and reappears, channeling an arc that deals physical damage over time and greatly slows the character down in front of him. Any damage he deals with this attack is given to him as energy shield.

During the fight, Madness Propagators will spawn, which fires slow projectile shots and leaves a patch of eldritch decay permanently if it is left alive long enough, which deals physical damage over time while standing over them. Killing them quickly is important so that the arena does not become overwhelmed by them.

As the Elder's life gets lower, he will start using more attacks:

  • Tentacle Whip: Spawns several tentacles that slam the ground to deal area of effect physical damage. This attack also leaves eldritch decay for a short time.
  • Rising Slam: The Elder spins around, launching multiple cold damage projectiles that impact in a ring around him, then teleports away. He will then teleport to your location and do a slam that deals heavy cold damage.
  • Petrifying Arc: Identical to his Siphon attack, but he will freeze you in place instead. It guarantees him a second's worth of damage before the Shaper slams the Elder while freeing you.

Captured Phase

When the Elder is brought down to 25% life, the Shaper will capture him and leave him at the center of the arena. He will be invulnerable and the Shaper must channel to fully form all four restraints. You must protect him while the Elder spawns Null Portals that spawn multiple Madness Propagators that can attack the Shaper. Each restraint takes 35 seconds to finish. The Elder will also attack with Tentacle Whip later in the phase. The Shaper performs his restraints in the following order: left side, right side, bottom, top so keep that in mind when the Shaper finishes his current restraint.

If the Shaper's life is brought down to 0, he will retreat and the Elder will be freed, and you must finish the rest of the fight in his first phase.

One recommendation for protecting the Shaper is to use frost wall in front of him to prevent attacks from reaching him. Another one is to not focus on the null portals because they simply spawn back so it is advisable to simply focus on the monsters conjured by the null portals instead. Sulphur flasks can also heal the Shaper. Make sure you have enough clear speed or it will be very hard to successfully do this phase of the fight.

Unstable Phase

Once all four restraints have formed, the Shaper will leave and the Elder is vulnerable once again. He will continue to spawn Null Portals and attack with Tentacle Whip, Ice Spear novas, and Ring of Death, but will also periodically release a large dark pulse that deals physical damage and covers the entire arena.

When the Elder is killed in this phase, he will charge up a final lethal blast. Zana will appear at the bottom right side of the arena with a protective bubble. Retreat to Zana before he uses his last attack.

Uber Elder

Tier 17 Elder (also known as Uber Elder) can be fought by progressing through the Epilogue quests by collecting all 15 Memory Fragments then defeating Elder Guardians and the Shaper. Afterwards, when a Tier 15 map is Elder-influenced, it will cause all Tier 16 maps to become Shaper-influenced. Clear all four guardian maps, beginning with the map adjacent to the Elder influenced map and continuing with the two adjacent guardian maps (moving in a circle around the guardian maps will cause all influence to disappear), and the Elder will occupy The Shaper's Realm. Then as usual, you need to take out all 4 of the Elder's Guardians to summon Uber Elder.

The Elder is assisted by the Shaper in this battle. The battle essentially pits the player against both bosses, with some divergences:

  • One of the bosses will be invulnerable, alternating between the two for every 25% health lost. The invulnerable boss will use less attacks than normal. When both bosses are at 25% health, both bosses will be vulnerable.
  • Volatile Anomalies and Madness Propagators will continuously spawn during the fight, alternating every 20 seconds.
  • There are no special phases from either boss.
  • At each 1/4 health lost, the Elder or Shaper will spawn adds. The Elder will summon multiple Null Portals and the Shaper channels a portal like in his regular fight. Both are invulnerable during this phase.
  • The Elder will not use his Petrifying Arc attack and the Shaper will not use his Shadow Clone or Bullet Hell attack.

  • The Elder's Unstable phase is now more difficult, and can drop more Elder items if successfully completed. This is now the only way to obtain the Watcher's Eye unique jewel.
