Your adventures are haunted by the spirits of tormented criminals that yield their ill-gotten gains when slain. Eager to protect their trove, these spirits flee when encountered and imbue nearby monsters with dangerous powers, which improves their item drops.
Description on the official Path of Exile website [1]
The Torment league was a league parented to the standard league. In the Torment league, your adventures were haunted by the spirits of tormented criminals that yielded their ill-gotten gains when slain. Eager to protect their trove, these spirits fled when encountered and imbue nearby monsters with dangerous powers, which improves their item drops. It was also possible for spirits to possess rare and unique enemies, greatly increasing their threat (and value!) to treasure-seeking exiles.[1]
The league started along with the Bloodlines league on December 13, 2014 and ended on March 24, 2015 (NZ time). At the end of the league, all characters and stashes were moved to Standard league. Characters that died respawned in Torment.
